What is Hand Therapy?

As defined by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission, “hand therapy” is the art and science of evaluating and treating injuries and conditions of the upper extremity (shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand).

Using specialized skills in assessment, planning and treatment, hand therapists provide therapeutic interventions to prevent dysfunction, restore function and/or reverse the progression of pathology of the upper limb in order to enhance an individual’s ability to execute tasks and to participate fully in life situations.

Treatment may involve activity and exercise programs, education, custom orthotic (splint) fabrication, manual therapy, wound and scar care, and therapeutic modalities (such as ultrasound or electromodalities).

What is a Hand Therapist?

A hand therapist is a physiotherapist (PT) or occupational therapist (OT) who, through advanced continuing education, clinical experience and integration of knowledge in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, has become proficient in treatment of pathological upper extremity conditions.

What is a Certified Hand Therapist – CHT?

A hand therapist may achieve advanced certification as a certified hand therapist, referred to a CHT. They are required to obtain a minimum of 3 years of experience, including 4,000 hours or more in direct practice in hand therapy.

Certified hand therapists must also pass a rigorous certification exam to demonstrate their competency in advanced clinical skills and theory. In order to demonstrate continued professional development and competency, every CHT is required to re-certify every 5 years.

CHTs specialize in treatment of hand and upper extremity conditions, from the shoulder to the finger tips! They work closely with orthopaedic and plastic surgeons to ensure maximal outcomes for patients.
